Stop normalizing this behaviour

International women's day. Which really should be every day, but because we live in a world where everything sucks and we can't have nice things, we have to set apart a specific day to celebrate women.

You know. Those creatures that populate half the planet. And apparently we need a day to REMIND THE WORLD of our important. Aside from the fact that without us, the human population would literally die off. Aside from our contributions to science, politics, mathematic, research, technology, and basically just every aspect of life. Because it's 2017. I'm pretty sure that we've all established that women and girls are just as capable as men and boys and that everyone should be raised and supported with the same rights and opportunities.

Yes, I know that today is international WOMENS day and I don't want to detract from that, but what I'm writing about today is the men in our lives. Men who I would like to believe are feminists, but we know 'not all men' are. For those who are lucky enough to not have to suffer from intersectionality, I'm sorry to break it to you, but you shouldn't be commended for being "such good guys".

Can we stop normalizing this behaviour? That they get praise for... supporting their friends and family and colleagues...? That we're commending men for NOT hitting women or abusing women or for being polite or supporting female rights (which are human rights). To the guys who think they're so great, that they're special because they don't hate on a girl for putting you in the friend zone. To the guys who think they're saints for not Cat calling. To the guys who think that they deserve recognition because they publicly label themselves as a feminist.

Sorry to break it to you fellas. You don't get a cookie for doing something you're supposed to already be doing. Why do you think you deserve recognition for being a decent human being?

Let's celebrate taking action. Let's celebrate speaking up. Let's celebrate standing together, making positive change, supporting each other, creating equal opportunities and smashing glass ceilings.

Let's celebrate women. Let's celebrate today and everyday.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY EVERYBODY.
